Westmoreland Village granted extension

Planning Committee agreed to extend the deadline until January 2027

The Manx Development Corporation has been given more time to finalise a legal agreement for the Westmoreland Village scheme.

The Planning Committee agreed to extend the deadline until January 2027.

Members voted unanimously to approve the extension for the scheme, which was granted planning approval in May 2025, but has not yet been finalised in part because the MDC does not own all the land required for the project.

The MDC indicated it wished to seek a further extension ‘until January 2027’ and received Treasury backing the request, after the department commissioned a review into the impact of rising construction costs on brownfield regeneration.

In an email presented to the committee, Treasury said the extended review leaves the MDC facing challenges in committing to new projects.

Westmoreland Village, bordered by Demesne Road and Westmoreland Road in Douglas, comprises 133 new homes including apartments, townhouses and a senior living block.

It also includes a new scout hut and community pavilion, four commercial units, and the refurbishment and extension of Crookall House for office use.

If the agreement is not reached within the extended period, the application may be referred back to the committee.
