Yellow warning in place for coastal overtopping and inner harbour flooding

A yellow weather warning has been issued for tomorrow (Thursday 11 September) as strong south-westerly winds and large high tides continue to impact the Island.

We're being warned to expect coastal overtopping and inner harbour flooding between 12:30am and 4pm.

The areas most likely to be affected by coastal overtopping are Castletown promenade, Shore Road, Rushen and the northern end of Douglas promenade.

The areas most likely to be affected by inner harbour flooding are Back Hope Street, Castletown and to a lesser extent the Tongue in Douglas.

Forecasters at Ronaldsway Met Office have issued the following breakdown:

  • High tide at 2:12am - Strong south-westerly winds accompanied with large high tides overnight will lead to minor coastal overtopping of water and minor debris around the hours of high tide (12:30am-3:30am). This will affect Castletown promenades, Shore Road Rushen and the northern end of Douglas promenade. Some slight inner harbour flooding is also expected around this time Back Hope Street, Castletown (potentially around 10-15cm- but floodgates should be closed) and a few centimetres around the Tongue, Douglas.
  • High tide at 2:25pm - With continued strong south-westerly winds some further minor coastal overtopping of water and minor debris is expected around the hours of the following high tide (1pm-4pm). This will affect Castletown promenades, Shore Road Rushen and the northern end of Douglas promenade.
