Social media sees products rise in popularity

Parents on the Isle of Man are being urged to talk to their children about the risks of nicotine pouches, also known as 'snus'.

QEII High School has written to caregivers, warning that the products are becoming increasingly visible to young people through social media, online advertising and internet retailers.

The small sachets are placed under the upper lip, releasing nicotine into the body.

The substance is highly addictive and can affect concentration, mood, sleep and overall wellbeing.

Although the pouches don't contain tobacco, they're sometimes marketed as a modern alternative to smoking or vaping.

Nicotine can have significant effects on young people, with users also potentially experiencing headaches, dizziness, nausea and an increased heart rate.

QEII says the products are not permitted in school and is asking parents to help young people understand the risks of nicotine use and the potential long-term effects of addiction.
