'Wanted man' admits burgling Douglas coffee shop

40-year-old stole safe containing takings from Costa

A Douglas man will be sentenced later this year after admitting stealing a safe from a coffee shop.

Craig William Tiernan appeared at Douglas Courthouse today (3 September) where he pleaded guilty to burglary.

The 40-year-old, of Harris Promenade, entered Costa on Strand Street store as a trespasser on 28 May.

He proceeded to steal the safe, which contained four days’ worth of takings, and £100 from the till – the court heard the total loss to the business was £2,304.

Tiernan also admitted taking a Honda Jazz from the car park at The Sefton Hotel, without the owner’s consent, on the same date as well as driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance.

The prosecutor told the court there had been ‘some sophistication’ to Tiernan’s offending and a ‘significant degree of planning’ with the use of tools and the car.

Last month the Isle of Man Constabulary asked for the public’s help in finding Tiernan after searching for him in relation to an ‘ongoing investigation’ for several days without result.

Crimestoppers Isle of Man also offered a £1,000 reward for information that would lead to his arrest and charge.

On 26 August police confirmed he was in police custody and was assisting with their enquiries.

Tiernan will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery and will next appear there on 27 September.

There was no application for bail and he was remanded at the Isle of Man Prison until that date.
