Unite rejects call to suspend permit system
One of the Island's biggest unions has reaffirmed its position over the possible relaxation of the work permit system.
Unite's Eric Holmes says removal of the checks and controls would be completely unacceptable, even for a short period of time.
His statement follows comments from the Chamber of Commerce president, Mickey Swindale, who described the system as 'indefensible' considering the fall in population.
Mr Holmes accepts immigration is needed but says local employers must be persuaded to train local workers:
