Union calls to protect low-paid workers

It's Manx Budget day tomorrow (Tuesday) and Unite the Union is hoping it will bring some relief for the Island's lower paid.

The union's regional officer in the Isle of Man, Eric Holmes, has suggested as Treasury Minister Eddie Teare seems unwilling to change the tax brackets or make the rich pay more, he could up the personal allowance.

According to Mr Holmes, government figures show people on low incomes are spending more than they earn or have little left after their bills are paid, meaning some are having to draw benefits as well as work, which is not good for the economy.

He also feels Mr Teare needs to be telling companies to pay their workers more, echoing recent comments by David Cameron:
