Unemployment rises slightly, but overall rate holds steady

30 more people are out of work compared to March 2024

Unemployment on the Isle of Man increased by nine people last month, and has increased by 30 people in the 12 months to August.

The proportion of economically active people who are registered as being out of work has remained stable at 0.7 percent, with 322 people registered out of work.

Job Centre vacancies saw a drop by 66 roles in comparison to the previous month, with a total of 650.

Of these positions 67 percent are full-time and the remaining 33 percent were part-time.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates 767 people are unemployed and looking for work which equates to a rate of 1.7 percent.

The ILO figure accounts for not only those who may be registered unemployed but also those who may be actively looking for work but who haven't registered themselves as out of a job.

Retail, catering and entertainment and 'miscellaneous services' are the sectors with the highest number of unemployed people.

The industries with the highest number of job vacancies is in catering and entertainment, medical and health services and 'other business services'.

Two-hundred-and-ten men are unemployed, compared with 112 women.

Long-term unemployment is defined as anyone who has been out of work for a year or longer, as of June, there are 27 people who fall into this category.

Geographically, the east is home to the most unemployed people at 229.

The north, south and west sit at 41, 33 and 19 respectively.
