UK Assisted Dying Bill has 'many of the same safeguards' as Manx legislation

LegCo has progressed Manx legislation to clauses stage

A Bill hoping to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales, is said to have many of the same safeguards as the Isle of Man's legislation.

The Manx Bill is currently going through our Legislative Council.

Details of the UK's proposals have just been published, and state a person will need a life expectancy of six months or less and sign off by two doctors and the High Court.

Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson, who brought forward the private member's bill here, says it was useful to read their Bill, which echos his.

Last month, LegCo voted in favour of the principles of the Assisted Dying Bill and agreed to progress it further.

However, an amendment was passed to include an evidence stage so members would be able to consider the UK's legislation when it was published.
