Council of Ministers to review 1986 Petroleum Act
Tynwald has voted to restrict the issuing of licences for gas extraction in Manx waters.
It follows a motion brought to the court by Douglas East MHK Joney Faragher today who wanted hydrocarbon extraction in the Island’s territorial waters stopped.
Instead, after an amendment by the chief minister, parliament resolved that it should be government policy that no new licences are issued.
An existing licence, which has already been granted to Crogga, will be unaffected.
A review of the 1986 Petroleum Act will also be carried out by the Council of Ministers after an amendment to Ms Faragher’s motion from Rob Mercer MLC.
A report on the outcome of the review will be submitted to Tynwald by the end of January 2023.
