Tynwald approves 'short term' TV Licence funding

Treasury Minister wants to bring IoM in line with UK

Free TV Licences for over-75s have gained official re-approval in Tynwald - but the Treasury Minister insists it's a 'short term' fix.

Pensioners were left outraged after the previous administration scrapped the concession in last year's budget.

But a formal U-turn on the decision was yesterday unanimously approved by members.

The £600,000 per year cost will now be absorbed by government.

But Alf Cannan says Treasury wants to bring the Island's position in line with the UK's - where the BBC has agreed to fund older people's licences itself - in future.
