Tributes paid to John Wannenburgh

Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh has died.

The father of three was elected to the House of Keys in 2021.

He also served as chair of the Manx Utilities Authority and formerly owned and operated the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club.

The President of Tynwald Juan Watterson confirmed today (3 August) Mr Wannenburgh had 'passed away peacefully last night in his sleep'.

In a letter to Tynwald members Mr Watterson said: "John rose to fame on the Island with his legendary Sporting and Dining Club, which not only attracted fascinating people to the Island, but has raised over £250,000 for charity.

"Since his election in 2021 he has become synonymous with his work as chairman of the Manx Utilities Authority where he was always keen on sharing the latest ‘good news’.

"MUA board members would always be aware of how many days South Africa had been Rugby Union Champions.

"He was an excellent ambassador for our Island, being an active member of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly and CPA.

"He was certainly relishing the prospect of the 2026 election as an opportunity to promote the work he had done with DHA, DEFA and the Economic Policy Review Committee.

"John took his politics seriously and prided himself on being straight talking but was also the life and soul of any party with great stories of the celebrities from all walks of life that he had got to know.

"He leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and his three boys.

"I know he will be a much-missed friend and colleague."

Mr Wannenburgh had declared his intention to stand for re-election in September's General Election.

He also attended the 53rd memorial of the Summerland disaster on Sunday evening (2 August).
