Concession restored, rebates to be paid
A charge too far – that is how the Island’s new Treasury Minister has described the introduction of a television licence charge for over 75 year olds.
Tynwald yesterday (18 Oct) approved a motion from North Douglas member David Ashford, amended by Alfred Cannan, which will see free licences restored with immediate effect.
Anyone over the age of 75 who has paid the £145.50 fee since 1 September will now be refunded, with the cost met through savings in Jobseekers’ allowance payments.
Mr Cannan says he’ll bring a rebate scheme to Tynwald next month.
