Treasury plans health surcharge for new residents before end of administration

Estimates suggest more than half a million pounds could be generated

Treasury has confirmed plans to introduce a health surcharge for new residents before the end of the current administration.

Minister Alex Allinson says legislative changes will be required to bring the measure into force, rejecting suggestions that the existing legal framework would allow the levy to be introduced immediately.

Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas estimated the surcharge could generate around £600,000 for Manx Care.

The surcharge was previously suggested by Douglas South MHK Claire Christian prior to her appointment as health minister.

In December 2023, Tynwald backed calls for the Council of Ministers to look into the issue and report back in July last year.
