Traffic fine refusers face tough action

Repeat traffic offenders could see their vehicles impounded, sold or destroyed if they don't pay their fines.

The Department of Infrastructure has announced it'll start removing vehicles belonging to those who have racked up and not paid, large number of fixed penalty notices.

The DoI says it will also target those who have allowed their vehicles to contravene traffic regulations, such as parking on a junction or double yellow lines, for extended periods.

From Novermber 1 the department says those vehicles will be removed to a secure compound until the requisite removal and storage fees have been paid.

Vehicles not collected will be disposed of, either by selling or scrapping them.

Director of Highways Richard Pearson said: "individuals who commit the occasional offence and pay their fines should not be concerned as this policy is only applicable to persistent offenders who do not pay."
