Top civil servant reflects on her career

The Manx government's outgoing chief secretary says the Isle of Man's political ties with the United Kingdom and other countries has been transformed in recent years.

Mary Williams retired this week from the post, which she took up in 2002, after a 40-year career in public service.

Her remit has carried heavy responsibilities, being principal adviser to the chief minister and Council of Minsiters, adviser to the Lieutenant Governor and head of the Civil Service.

But Mrs Williams' role as the formal point of communication between the Manx administration and other governments, has been among the most challenging.

She says she has played a part in promoting the Island's message beyond its shores:
