Thompson 'confident' in MGP/Classic TT adaptability

Clerk of the Course says there's 'wriggle room' in the event of disruption

The Clerk of the Course for the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT insists he's 'confident' both events can adapt in the event of any delays or enforced changes.

In what is his 14th year in post, Gary Thompson will once again oversee race operations for both meetings, taking place from this Sunday (16 August) through until Friday, 28 August.

During late May and early June at TT 2026, there was heavy disruption at times due to poor weather and racing incidents in an event he says was arguably the most challenging TT he's ever taken charge of.

Mr Thompson adds he remains aware some of his decisions over sessions can spark criticism at times, but has reiterated that competitor safety remains his first priority when making important calls:

Away from the racing, filming has continued this month on parts of the Snaefell Mountain Course for an upcoming TT-inspired feature film.

Mr Thompson says he's aware that some further film production could take place around the MGP session on Sunday, but adds any filming would have no impact on designated practice time.

As it stands, roads around the Snaefell Mountain Course will close for the first MGP 2026 session on Sunday at 12.45pm and will reopen no later than 6pm.
