Tesco: we are 'committed' to sell Island meat

There's a new turn in the troubled tale of Manx meat sales in Tesco.

Earlier this week, meat plant bosses said they would no longer supply the supermarket because the costs involved were too high.

That meant no Island meat for sale in the Douglas store whatsoever.

Now Tesco has responded, saying it IS committed to offering locally-sourced meat in its Isle of Man store.

Meat plant bosses spent almost a year meeting standards set by Tesco, after the sale of Manx meat in the Douglas store was suspended in February last year.

But it was back on the shop shelves for just six weeks.

Last Friday supply from the meat plant was suspended, with Isle of Man Meats Chef executive John Dawkins blaming the fixed costs imposed on the supplier by Tesco for inspections and administration.

There was also a query over the Island's firm status:

Now Tesco has issued a statement stating it 'remains committed' to selling local meat in its store here.

The firm has written to Mr Dawkins seeking a meeting in the coming days.
