Tragedy narrowly averted, say police
Police say roads are safer today after a young driver was banned for 18 months following an incident on Marine Drive in January.
The Subaru he was driving went over a cliff edge last at night on January 23 this year – fortunately all those inside were rescued safely.
The teenager, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was in court this week facing charges of causing serious bodily harm while driving without due care and attention.
He was fined £500, and ordered to pay costs of more than £600 as well as being banned until he retakes his driving test.
Sergeant Steve Lapsley of the Roads Policing Unit says the boy’s inexperience in a powerful car could have been catastrophic.
He says the ban will hopefully protect others, as well as give the driver time to reflect on how narrowly tragedy was averted.
