'Switch on' of sex offences legislation will better protect victims of crime

Defendants also afforded anonymity in some cases

Making crimes like revenge porn and voyeurism punishable under their own specific offences will better protect victims on the Isle of Man.

That’s from the Justice and Home Affairs minister who will ‘switch on’ the Sexual Offences and Obscene Publications Act on Monday (25 March).

The legislation received Royal Assent in 2021 - now, more than two and a half years later, it will take effect.  

It follows Tynwald approval for one set of regulations and one order this week.

Conversion therapy has also been outlawed, child abuse and exploitation offences have been updated and maximum penalties have been changed to bring prison sentences more in line with the United Kingdom.

However, unlike England, the act will also introduce protections for people who have been accused of certain sexual offences.

The names of some defendants will now not be published until the point they plead guilty or are found guilty after trial.
