Man found guilty of common assault following trial

A man who attacked a fellow inmate whilst serving a sentence in Jurby prison has been given a suspended sentence.

Forty-year-old Gary John Beattie of Claughbane Walk, Ramsey, was found guilty of common assault following a trial.

He attacked another man, grabbing him by the throat and pushing him back onto a bed in a cell, leaving him with cuts and abrasions, in August last year.

Beattie spent seven days in the segregation wing as punishment.

The court heard since his release in September last year Beattie has been in full-time employment.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Beattie to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £2,000.
