26-year-old acted 'on a reckless basis'

A Douglas man has avoided being sent to prison after exhibiting 'extreme violence' during an incident in a nightclub.

Casey Andrew Townend, of Park Road, was handed 22 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, after he assaulted three women on 26 January.

In his basis of plea, the 26-year-old admitted 'acting first' but argued that he 'reacted in anger to provocation'.

The court heard he pushed a woman, who then threw a glass bottle in his direction which smashed on the wall behind him.

In response, Mr Townend 'held her whilst punching her repeatedly' to her face, neck and shoulders.

Two other women stood nearby also took hits as he punched out 'on a reckless basis'.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood said there was an 'element of victim blaming' in his defence, adding: "You should consider yourself fortunate her injuries weren't worse."

She also ordered him to pay £750 in compensation and £50 in prosecution costs.
