Summerland disaster to be remembered at annual service

1973 tragedy claimed the lives of 50 people. 

A memorial service to mark the 51^st anniversary of the Summerland tragedy will take place next month.

Douglas Council will remember those who died, and those whose lives were impacted by the fire, on 2 August.

Members of the public are invited to gather at the Kaye Memorial Garden, on Queen's Promenade in Douglas, at 6.45pm.

Wreaths will be laid by the Mayor of Douglas Natalie Byron-Teare, Deputy Chief Minister Jane Poole-Wilson and survivor Ruth McQuillan-Wilson.

Council Leader Claire Wells said: “As a council we are unified in our desire to pay a respectful tribute to those who were forever touched by a tragedy that claimed 50 lives.

“What happened at Summerland continues to resonate for both survivors and the relatives of those who died, and it is important an annual tribute is held in their memory.”
