Steam Packet freight charge increase 'not linked to minimum wage'

3.3 percent rise came into force in October

The treasury minister says the Steam Packet's recent increase to its freight charges wasn't linked to minimum wage.

Responding to a Tynwald written question, Chris Thomas confirmed the 3.3 percent came into force in October as part a 'harmonisation' of freight charges.

The Sea Services Agreement prevents freight charges being increased by more than inflation, with this rise reflecting August's Manx Consumer Prices Index.

Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan asked to what extend the increase was due to the scheduled increase in minimum wage, but Minister Thomas said he was unaware of any connection.
