
Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan says a letter published in the Sunday Telegraph shows changing attitudes in education over the decades.
On Sunday, his letter to the newspaper told how his father had been taught to spell by rote – with the cane waiting in case he made a mistake.
Mr Rodan said his letter was part of an ongoing debate in the paper about the pros and cons of phonetic spelling in English.
He says when his father was at school, things were very different.
