Snaefell trams halted amid safety concerns

Speed limits imposed for review exceeded

There's been an immediate halt of operations on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.

During an 'urgent' review of the heritage transport, the Health and Safety Work Inspectorate has decided to close the line amid safety concerns.

The investigation was undertaken after a carriage lost power and suffered 'brake failure' whilst descending from the summit last Friday.

Infrastructure bosses closed the trams after they failed to keep to a temporary eight mile per hour speed limit; introduced for safety reasons after the incident.

The railway will only resume service after it demonstrates it can effectively run at the reduced speed limit - the usual limit is 12mph.
