Shorter rehabilitation proposed for Manx offenders

Public asked for feedback ahead of Tynwald consideration

Manx offenders could face a shorter rehabilitation period if new proposals are given the go-ahead.

The Isle of Man Government is seeking feedback from the public on plans to reduce the amount of time before a conviction is considered spent.

Currently, Manx offenders face a longer wait than UK convicts before their crime can effectively be ignored.

A person given a custodial sentence of up to six months on the Isle of Man faces a seven-year rehabilitation period under current laws, compared to just two years in the UK.

The Department of Home Affairs wants to change this, bringing it in line with British legislation.

A public consultation on the proposals opened this week, with responses being accepted until 12 September.
