Security fence a 'waste of taxpayers cash'

Castletown commissioners have criticised a £1.2 million security fence to be built around Ronaldsway Airport.

The airport’s current fence was slated by the UK’s Department of Transport more than three years ago as 'totally unsatisfactory'.

At last night’s board meeting, commissioners claimed the six-foot fence was a waste of taxpayers cash which could be better spent on health or education.

They said the new fence – required to meet EU security standards – was another example of the UK leading the Island by the nose.

In a letter to the commissioners, Airport Director Anne Reynolds explained contractors would start construction on the five kilometres of fencing in November.

She said it wouldn’t back directly onto the airfield itself but could be placed further back to lessen its visual impact.

And instead of being bare metal wire, Mrs Reynolds said it could be painted black or green after consultation with residents.

But she warned not going ahead with the project could lead to UK airports refusing to accept Manx flights because of security concerns.
