10 of the 30 vehicles stopped had issues with lights or other minor faults

A third of vehicles stopped on the second night of the police's winter checks campaign were found to have defects.

Officers stopped 30 motorists at their checkpoint in St John's last night, with 10 found to be driving a vehicle with a lighting fault or other minor defect, while one has a serious tyre defect resulting in a fine and licence points.

Earlier this week, 18 of 27 drivers stopped in Crosby had vehicle defects.

The Roads Policing Unit says it will have a third roadside checkpoint set up in a different location over the weekend.

The stops are part of Operation Uplift, which is aiming to keep road users safe during the darker and colder conditions over winter.
