Scottish Govt welcomes delay on Scallop fishing 'restrictions'

Will speak to DEFA to find a way forward

The Scottish government has welcomed moves by the Isle of Man to delay new licence restrictions for scallop fishing in Manx territorial waters.

It was announced yesterday (Fri) that proposals to require vessels to report into Manx ports for possible catch inspection, due to come into effect on Monday (8th), had been put back a week to allow for discussions.

Rural Economy Secretary for the Scottish Government, Fergus Ewing, says he understands that the Manx Government has concerns over possible misreporting of catches and, if substantiated, they would wish to see proportionate control measures introduced.

Mr Ewing says he wants to avoid such restrictive measures if at all possible, as these risk damaging crews carrying out their legitimate activities in an industry worth in excess of £3 million per annum to Scotland.

He adds that the Scottish Government is happy to work with IOM Officials to come to an agreement that all interests can benefit from sustainable fishing - and he will be speaking with DEFA Minister Geoffrey Boot early next week to find a way forward.
