
A war of words broke out in the House of Keys today, over scallops.
In response to a question from Michael MHK David Cannan, Fisheries Minister Phil Gawne said he was aware Scottish and Irish fishermen had plundered a scallop bed marked off-limits to Manx boats.
But he said he didn’t have the power to close the fishery without the agreement of United Kingdom authorities, because it was beyond the three-mile limit.
Pressed by Mr Cannan about why the Island’s fisheries protection vessel didn’t stop the Irish and Scottish fishermen, Mr Gawne’s answer was blunt:
