Roadside cameras to catch road tax dodgers

Failing to pay road tax has been branded 'socially unacceptable' by Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer, who has outlined his plans to tackle the issue.

This week, roadside cameras - known as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology - will be placed across the Island to identify and prosecute motorists who fail to register their vehicles or pay road tax.

Staff from the Department of Infrastructure (DoI) will be visible at the roadside with cameras, which capture vehicle registration numbers and check to see if the appropriate tax has been paid.

The maximum fine for driving an untaxed or unregistered vehicle is £2,000.

Use of this new technology will also allow the DoI to start modernising its vehicle and driver licensing services, which will eventually lead to tax discs being withdrawn.
