Disparity in reception class numbers

A review of school catchment areas in Onchan has been launched after a major disparity in September's intake came to light. 

At present 75 reception children are due to start at Onchan Primary School this autumn, while just 29 pupils have been registered for Ashley Hill.

It will leave Onchan over capacity and Ashley Hill with empty classrooms, the education minister told the House of Keys today (28 March).

Graham Cregeen said plans to tweak the catchment areas for a better balance are being drawn up, but won't come into effect in time for this autumn.

Parents of children due to start at Onchan are being asked to reconsider Ashley Hill in the meantime.

Mr Cregeen said the department had confidence in both schools and there were no plans to shut any schools in the Island.
