Department's headcount has fallen from 855 to 781
The Department of Infrastructure says maintaining a resilient workforce remains one of its key challenges, as new figures show staff numbers have continued to fall over the past year.
According to its latest plan update, the DOI has reduced its headcount from 855 in September 2024 to 781 by June 2025. It describes the process as a long-running effort to meet budget requirements while still supporting essential frontline services.
The document also highlights an ageing workforce across the organisation, with a particularly high proportion of manual roles.
The DOI says this presents a growing operational risk, as future retirements and physical demands on staff will need to be carefully managed.
Officials say work is underway to analyse staffing composition in more detail and plan for long-term sustainability, including identifying areas where future shortages may emerge.
It adds that a new apprenticeship scheme from next year will help build future capacity.
