Replica Christopher Columbus ship extends stay in capital

Original was used in explorer's first expedition across the Atlantic

A full size-replica of Christopher Columbus's flagship will extend her stay in Douglas until next weekend.

Due to demand and a slight change in her schedule, the Nao Santa María will now be open to visitors until Sunday 13 September.

She was originally meant to depart the Island on Monday (7 September).

The original ship was used by Columbus in his first expedition across the Atlantic in 1492 when he landed in the Americas.

The replica currently docked in the capital was built in 2018 over an 18-month period and hosts exhibitions on board.

Her visit was arranged by Douglas City Centre Management in conjunction with the Nao Victoria Foundation.

Oliver Cheshire from Douglas City Centre Management said: "The take-up of people wanting go on board has been phenomenal.

"As a result of the demand, along with a slight change in her schedule, the team has agreed to stay on next week so members of the public have further chances to explore the ship's interior, discover life on board in the 15th century and learn about the voyages that helped shape world history and the challenges faced by sailors more than 500 years ago.

"We would also like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Harbours Team for their considerable co-operation, support and hard work in accommodating this visit. 

"Their flexibility and willingness to assist are greatly appreciated and we are particularly grateful for their time making the necessary arrangements and for their continued support."

He added: "Hosting the Nao Santa María is a real coup for Douglas.

"As one of just 30 ports on this year’s international tour, we are proud to welcome her and her crew.

"She’s a unique cultural attraction suitable for all ages and the team is looking forward to welcoming both residents and visitors over the next week and a half."

Tours are available from 10am to 8pm each day.
