Facebook group started to share ideas with other parents

A Ramsey mum has told Manx Radio she wants to start a conversation about delaying children's access to smartphones.

Meghan Kennish has two children and says she wants them to get to know the world in real life first, before seeing it through a screen.

She's also calling on other parents to support her in asking for them to be banned in schools.

One Manx Radio listener suggested: 'Manx Telecom and Sure could age restrict mobile phones sold to children, so that unsuitable material cannot be accessed online.'

In response, Manx Telecom says: 

"At Manx Telecom, customers must be at least 18 years old to purchase a mobile contract. For those under 18, a parent or guardian typically takes out the contract on their behalf.

"Each mobile device includes built-in privacy management features designed to protect minors. For instance, Apple’s Family Sharing requires approval for app downloads and allows certain functionalities to be locked.

"Our Fibre and broadband services also offer configurable routers to block inappropriate content.

"We encourage all Manx Telecom customers to visit the Tech Bench in our MT store for support or guidance where required. Parents are also advised to visit handset manufacturers' websites for additional information."
