30-year-old fined £700 for cultivation offence

A Ramsey man has been fined £700 after being caught growing cannabis ‘red handed’.

Police had turned up at Gary Robert Bowie’s home, on Brookhill Road, on another matter when they found a plant and growing equipment.

The 30-year-old admitted cultivating cannabis on 5 September during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The court heard the plant was ‘established’ with the prosecutor confirming police had estimated its potential value to be up to £1,680 when fully grown.

Bowie’s advocate queried that value saying he believed officers had ‘no idea at all’ on its potential yield but accepted: “He’s been caught by the police red handed in his own home.”

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Bowie, who was said to be growing the Class B substance for medicinal use, to pay prosecution costs of £125.

Passing sentence she told him: "There was some sophistication to your growing of it – you will suffer for that."
