Public feedback on new health tax proposals 'vital'

More than 3,000 responses have been received so far ahead of Wednesday's deadline

The treasury minister says feedback from the public on plans for a new healthcare tax is vital.

A public consultation on proposals for an NHS Levy closes on Wednesday, with more than 3,000 responses received so far.

When the consultation opened in March, Alex Allinson said a range of options were being looked at, including applying the charge to different forms of income separate from the current income tax system.

The levy would be capped at £5,000 for individuals and £10,000 for jointly assessed couples, and it's estimated it would raise an extra £28 million per year for health.

The idea hasn't been without criticism, as the Liberal Vannin Party recently described the idea as 'half-baked', suggesting it would unfairly disadvantage those on lower incomes, while the Isle of Man Medical Society has also voiced concerns.
