Public asked to leave out water for hedgehogs during hot weather

Charity asks people to help wildlife during dry spell

People are being urged to help the Isle of Man’s hedgehog population from ending up in potentially ‘dangerous situations’ during the dry weather.

The Manx Hedgehog Conservation Society says it’s received more than 50 calls for help in the last week – 16 calls were made on Sunday.

It says hedgehogs are heading for drains without covers on, in search of water, and are getting stuck or being found dead – they’re also had reports of them falling into ponds.

Residents are now asked to leave water outside in a shallow dish which other wildlife could also benefit from.  

Founder Sandy Huyton says the animals are dehydrated, and it’s also becoming difficult for them to find food, but has warned people not to move them:
