Average wait of more than one year for first consultant-led outpatient appointment

Patients on the Isle of Man are having to wait more than a year for an outpatient appointment with a consultant.

Manx Care says its latest annual report evidences the 'significant challenges' which it faces.

The report, covering the period between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026 reveals the average wait for a first consultant-led appointment has risen to 56 weeks.

It also shows an 18 percent increase in patients spending more than 12 hours in the Emergency Department and a £14.9 million operational deficit.

The health and social care body says it 'recognises that these issues must be tackled'.

Interim Chief Executive Dr Chris Stockport said: “Our colleagues continue to work hard to provide safe, compassionate care in a demanding environment.

"We recognise the significant challenges we face, including long waiting times and financial pressures, and are committed to being open about these pressures, making the best use of our resources and delivering lasting improvements for patients and service users.”

Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian added: “We monitor Manx Care’s performance throughout the year and this assessment provides a formal opportunity to take stock.

"There has been meaningful progress, and I thank staff for their continued commitment, but significant challenges remain, particularly around waiting times and financial sustainability.

"Our focus continues to be on ensuring that plans translate into measurable improvements that patients and service users can see and feel.”

The report has been shared with the Department of Health and Social Care which will now assess Manx Care’s performance over the financial year and issue a letter of assessment.

Both documents will be laid at the December sitting of Tynwald.
