Port St Mary RNLI assist two kayakers after tidal difficulties

A member of the public called 999 to assist 

Crews from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute in Port St Mary assisted two people having difficulty on a kayak just off Langness.  

On Monday afternoon (25 May), the Frank Martin boat was launched following a report by a member of the public.

The kayakers, who had launched from Derbyhaven bay, experienced strong tidal currents after leaving the shelter of the bay and could not make progress against the tide.

Both kayakers were safe and well.

Andy Mulhern, Operations Officer with Isle of Man Coastguard, says: "Getting caught out by tidal conditions can happen quickly, so it’s important to check conditions and plan your route before heading out.

"We would remind anyone heading out on the water to always check the weather and tide times, understand local currents, carry a means of calling for help, ideally a VHF radio, and always wear suitable flotation devices."
