Tony Mitchell's crew number to be retired after sudden passing

Port Erin RNLI has paid tribute to a man described as a 'friend and dad of the crew', following his death.

Crew member Tony Mitchell died suddenly on 29 March at the age of 50.

The station's Lifeboat Operations Manager, Lewis Ridgway says Tony's 'calming, steady and passionate influence was felt by all who knew him'.

Mr Ridgway adds: "Often described as the Dad of the crew, Tony’s passing has been felt far and wide throughout the RNLI.

"It cannot be understated just how pivotal Tony was to our little station. His calming, steady and passionate influence was felt by all who knew him, and that will be deeply missed.

"Tony served at Port Erin Lifeboat Station from 2015 and became a central figure at the station. He joined as crew and, over time, went on to serve the station in a number of important roles including Helm, Trainer Assessor and Head Launcher. Through each of these roles he shared his knowledge, experience and passion for the RNLI with those around him.

"I like to think that everyone who joins the RNLI does so because they believe in the cause of saving lives at sea. Tony was the absolute embodiment of that belief. He lived and breathed the RNLI and would always make sure everyone in the room remembered why we do what we do, whether it was bringing the crew together or simply reminding us of that purpose.

"When someone joins the station they are assigned a crew number. Tony was number 11. In very special circumstances that number is retired following the passing of a crewmember. In recognition of Tony’s service and the lasting impact he has had on our station, crew number 11 will now be retired, ensuring his memory and contribution remain part of Port Erin Lifeboat Station forever.

"Everyone at Port Erin Lifeboat Station, and across the wider RNLI family, sends their deepest and most sincere condolences to Tony’s family. His wife Emma, and children Sam and Eleanor, are in all our thoughts."

"Tony will always remain part of the Port Erin lifeboat family."

Mr Mitchell's funeral will take place at St Catherine’s Church, Port Erin on Thursday 30 April 2026 at 2pm.
