Policy will prevent 'oversubscription' at schools

Education chiefs in the Isle of Man are taking a stronger stand on school catchment areas.

Until recently, pupils in the east of the Island could choose which Douglas secondary school they attended.

But now, the the Department of Education and Children says all Manx youngsters will have to go to the one nearest their home.

If a child's primary school is outside the catchment area, they will be expected to return to a nearby high school.

However, if an older sibling already attends a school outside the area, the younger one will also be admitted.

Minister Eddie Teare says the new Catchment Area Order is a more efficient use of the department's resources and will prevent oversubscription:
