Police hope to make TT 2010 safest ever

The annual TT road safety campaign is officially launched today (Friday), with a number of strong messages set to be revealed.

They are expected to revolve around the usual themes of asking people to increase their general awareness, and look out for motorbikes.

Campaigns in the past have also warned of the dangers and consequences of drink driving, and reminders to bikers about their attitude and conduct when out on the Island's roads.

Last year's event saw a decrease in fatal crashes on 2008 from four to one, but accidents overall were up by 19 per cent, from 83 to 99.

An detailed analysis of the incidents showed the number of 'life changing' injuries suffered during the TT 2009 fortnight was considerably down on previous years.

But of the 99 crashes last year, 75 per cent involved motorbikes.

The Roads Policing Unit is aiming to make this year's TT the safest on record.
