DEFA confirms MNH has pulled 'welcome hub' idea
Plans to build a new visitor entrance at the Laxey Wheel have been withdrawn.
Manx National Heritage has pulled its idea to demolish, and rebuild, the kiosk facility at the Mines Road site.
In a letter, seen by Manx Radio, a technical officer from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture confirms the idea is not being proceeded with.
The heritage organisation had sought permission to build a single storey ‘welcome hub’ which contained staff accommodation and administration space.
The existing kiosk, MNH said, provided a ‘poor visitor welcome’ with no opportunity for shelter as well as limited retail opportunities.
However the new design was criticised by a number of people including Manx historian Charles Guard who described it as ‘dreadful’.
