Photos show extent of Ramsey Swing Bridge defects

New photos have been published showing the extent of defects on Ramsey Swing Bridge.

Problems were found within the timber bridge deck beneath the carriageway surface.

The Department of Infrastructure says the defects were found during a routine inspection, and thankfully identified before they developed into a more serious structural issue.

Essential maintenance work began on Monday (3 August) and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

However, this could change in the event of extended periods of poor weather or if further defects are uncovered.

The Department of Infrastructure says the defects were found during a routine inspection, and thankfully identified before they developed into a more serious structural issue.

The DoI says: "Ramsey Swing Bridge is an important heritage structure and has been serving the community since 1892, long before motor vehicles were a common sight on the Island’s roads.

"Like many of the Department’s older assets, structures of this age require continual monitoring, maintenance and investment to ensure they remain safe and operational for future generations.

"The Department manages and maintains an extensive portfolio of bridges, highway structures, and other heritage assets including 209 highway bridges and 14 harbour bridges, together with many more culverts, retaining walls, and other supporting infrastructure. 

"Regular inspections, maintenance, and investment are essential to preserving these important assets and maintaining a safe transport network."

Going forward, the DoI says it plans to undertake a 'detailed structural assessment' of the bridge; any further works identified will be 'carefully considered and progressed accordingly'.

"Should more substantial refurbishment be required beyond existing maintenance budgets, the Department will consider future capital funding options to support longer-term improvements", it says.

The DoI has thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the course of the works.

The bridge will remain closed to motor vehicles while pedestrian access will be maintained so far as it is safe and practicable to do so.
