Public reminded to stay off nesting colonies

Police are warning people to stay away from nesting Arctic Terns in the north of the Island after an incident at the Point of Ayre this week.

A photographer is alleged to have disturbed the nesting birds in fenced-off colonies on Wednesday (24 June).

A number of people were in the area at the time and are reported to have been upset at the terns becoming agitated by his presence.

The terns make a 50,000 mile return journey from the southern oceans to nest and breed at the site, the only one of its kind on the Island.

The birds are a protected species and it is illegal to disturb, injure or kill them.
