Petitions seek change on diverse issues

Ancient right exercised at Tynwald Hill

Seven Tynwald Day petitions have been presented at St John's today (5 July).

The long-established right for members of the public to bring grievances directly to the Manx parliament at the annual outdoor ceremony, is a key tradition. 

Petitioners were invited to the foot of Tynwald Hill to hand them in - but they must wait to see if a member of Tynwald picks up their petition, and pursues the cause.

The process can prompt questions, inquiries, reviews or motions for debate in the House of Keys or Tynwald itself - and potentially longer-term, changes in the law.

Issues raised this year include water rates, the care of children by the authorities and development on a beach in Port St Mary.
