Petitioner calls for increased support for those with learning disabilities

Wants to see sheltered housing village established on Island

One of the Tynwald Day petitioners is calling for support to help those with learning disabilities live a "meaningful life".

Paula is asking for the introduction of a sheltered housing village with shops, a cafe and a community centre, allowing those with developmental issues to work and integrated.

The annual Tynwald ceremony gives petitioners a chance to ask the Island's parliament to change or introduce a law, fixing a perceived problem.

Nineteen petitioners came forward this year, the highest number in recent years and possibly a record figure.

She says the Isle of Man's definition of a learning disability, someone with an IQ below 70, is too narrow.
