Personal hearings will take place soon

It should be clear by December whether plans to de-regulate the Isle of Man's taxi trade will go ahead.

A consultation was launched last month to see what the public think about removing schedule two of the Road Transport Act, which would allow more people to apply for taxi licences.

Many drivers believe de-limiting the number of cabs would destroy their livelihoods and fear their business would be poached by part time drivers working weekends.

The consultation, sent out in August, included a written questionnaire to the industry, the public, and any other business which may be affected by the proposals.

It asked about the changes and about views on the existing trade and availability of taxis.

The panel considering submissions expects to deliver its report to Tynwald in December.

Some of those who made representations will be invited for personal hearings shortly.
