A 'Peace Plaque' has been unveiled in Hutchinson Square in Douglas.

It comes following a request from a member of the public to 'create a lasting feature that enhances one of the capital’s most tranquil and historic green spaces'.

Douglas City Council says it initially considered installing a Peace Bell, but the Council’s Regeneration and Community Committee 'opted for a quieter alternative following an on-site assessment, ensuring the setting remains respectful to nearby residents'.

The newly installed plaque features Article One of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Councillor Mrs Natalie Byron-Teare, chair of the committee, said: "We were delighted when a resident contacted us with the idea. Peace begins with the values we nurture in our everyday lives and the example we set for future generations.

"By creating spaces like this, we’re encouraging young people in particular to reflect on the importance of respect, equality and understanding - principles that are just as vital locally as they are globally."
